“The Long Now”

image03We often don’t think in long enough time frames. We used to though. There’s a concept of acting responsibly for the next  seven generations.

There is a foundation called the Long Now, who are pioneering a clock designed to work for over seven-thousand years. Here’s a quote from Danny Hillis, co-founder of The Long Now Foundation.

I think of the oak beams on the ceiling of College Hall at New College, Oxford. Last century, when the beams needed replacing, carpenters used oak trees that had been planted in 1386. The 14th-century builder had planted the trees in anticipation of the time, hundreds of years in the future, when the beams would need replacing.
